Happy to announce that I have been chosen to complete the Artist Educator Course in Toronto at the Royal Conservatory.
I am an emerging Métis/Anishinaabe Artist in Dunnville Ontario. Although I have no formal training in the arts, beyond high school, I have made it a life-long journey of self discovery. I feel most comfortable painting with rich colours and heavy textures. These textures are created by objects found around playgrounds and by the sides of roads. And in our own garbage! I am so thankful my son Parker has an eye for such things...he always brings me such great treasures to use in my work.
I use these found objects in my work in order to emphasize our wasteful culture. A work of art (beautiful or not is in the eye of the beholder) can be created using rubbish. It can be moulded and manipulated and transformed into something harmonious.
I am lucky enough to have family and friends who support my addiction to creating. My family is indulgent and allows me to use our entire family room as my studio. They are always close by and in this space I find peace and positive energy.
To be more specific I am interested in completing a body of work reflecting the spiritual nature of my culture. My paternal family is Métis/Anishinaabe descent and I grew up separated from them. Over the last several years I have been re-united with them and have been immersing myself in my culture. After many history lessons and beading circles I feel I am on the right road in my journey of self discovery. I feel that I have come to the time when I need to embrace the mystical imagery in my culture and apply them to my paintings.
